Chess in Frankfurt and across Rhein-Main

Chess in Rhein-Main happens at clubs. Frankfurt has them from Höchst and Zeilsheim to Bergen-Enkheim, and nearly every town between the Taunus, the Wetterau, the Kinzig valley and the Rheingau keeps a club evening of its own, most often on Friday. Wiesbaden, Mainz and Darmstadt add theirs, young players train before the adults sit down, and the Rhein-Main-Open and the Youth Classic fill the early summer.

Chess960 in Rhein-Main

Chess960 has an unusually firm footing on real boards around Frankfurt. SC Frankfurt-West says it has played Chess960 club tournaments on Friday evenings for more than 25 years, and its Zeilsheim hall has hosted the German Chess960 rapid championship; the Chess Tigers run a yearly Chess960 rally on twelve Mondays in Bad Soden, and Schachfreunde Frankfurt 1921 hold a monthly Freestyle series open to players of every strength.

Before each Chess960 game the pieces of the back rank are shuffled into one of 960 starting positions, so learned opening lines stop helping from the first move. Between those club dates the variant can be played online at ch960.com.

Reading an entry

The guide holds 101 entries at present, 101 of them current or awaiting a newer dated trace. They come from the schach.in club register, the league portal of the Hessian chess federation, the pages of the Frankfurt chess district, FIDE's list of rated tournaments, city pages and the clubs' own websites, all read on .

Lists are ordered by the date of their freshest evidence, never by merit. Where no page settles a point, the entry says "not given in the sources" instead of guessing. How listings are confirmed explains the status lines, the three source marks and what the guide leaves out.

Is a club evening missing or out of date?

Clubs in Rhein-Main move rooms, merge their teams and change their evening when a season begins. If an entry lags behind, or a club, a youth group, a school team or an open is missing, a line with a link to the page that shows it is all that is needed.
